Scotland!  The very name brings to mind images of castles and pipers, of mountains and “lochs.”  More than any other place on earth, fans of The Touring Club have asked us for a tour of Scotland and we are happy to introduce our exciting plan for 2012. It includes two days in Edinburgh including a performance of the famed “tattoo.”  We’ll sail on Loch Lomond and visit the Isle of Skye.  We’ll visit Culloden Battlefield, Glamis Castle and Saint Andrews.  Our tour will be limited to “just us” -- Touring Club only -- and to 4-star hotels. Here’s the complete itinerary:

Saturday, August 4:  Depart New Bern for Scotland

Sunday, August 5: Tour Glasgow including  Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Meet your tour director and enjoy a welcome drink before dinner.  Dinner and overnight at the Menzies Hotel in Glasgow.

Monday, August 6: Take a short cruise on Loch Lomond and later in the day a guided tour through stately Inveraray Castle. Cross Rannoch Moor and view spectacular Glen Coe the west coast.  Dinner and overnight at Isle of Glencoe Hotel, Ballachulish.

Tuesday, August 7:  Drive along the famous “Road to the Isles” and take a ferry to the Isle of Skye. Visit the Clan Donald Centre in Armadale Castle and enjoy a drive through the island scenery. Dinner, entertainment and overnight at Newton Hotel in Nairn.

Wednesday, August 8: Tour Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre and see where Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated in 1746. Tour Glenfiddich Distillery to view whisky making and sample a “wee dram.” Dinner and overnight at Ardoe House Hotel near Aberdeen.

Thursday, August 9: We’ll drive along “Royal Deeside” to Braemar, famous for its Highland games. Pass the Royal Family’s Balmoral Castle and visit the lovely Crathie Church. Have afternoon tea at Falls of Feugh. Dinner and overnight at Ardoe House Hotel.

Friday, August 10:  Visit Glamis Castle, the legendary setting of “Macbeth” and the childhood home of the late Queen Mother. Head to St. Andrews, the “Home of Golf.” See the famous Royal and Ancient Clubhouse and the Old Course . Continue into Edinburgh for a twilight city tour followed by dinner at a waterside restaurant. Overnight at the Holyrood Hotel in Edinburgh.

Saturday, August 11: Start your Edinburgh tour in the 200-year-old “New Town.” See medieval townhouses along the Royal Mile on the way to touring the imposing Edinburgh Castle. Free time today. Overnight: Holyrood Hotel.

Sunday, August 12: An open-top hop-on hop-off bus tour before our tour culminates in a performance of the spectacular Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Overnight: Holyrood Hotel. The next morning, August 13, we’ll return home.

The cost for everything listed above is $2495 per person/double occupancy.  Single supplement is $675. A $200 deposit holds your place; final payment is due May 1. Air travel is not included; we will be arranging optional group air travel at the lowest possible fare. We recommend travel insurance and can arrange it for you.
